Hockey is an amazing game that means a lot to many people.  We want to find out what exactly hockey means to you.  We asked the same question last year in our forums and got a lot of great responses.  This year we’re going to have some prizes for the best responses to the following statement:

Hockey is _________

To enter the contest, simply leave a comment to this post.  The comment link is right below this article.

The best response will receive 3 copies of Brett Henning’s book – 7 Pre-Game Habits of Pro Hockey Players (1 for you, and two to give to other players/coaches).  Second place will receive two copies of the book, and third will receive one copy.  Entry deadline is: February 24th, 2010

Words from the Author:

Hockey players and parents will spend thousands of dollars this year developing physical skills to improve their performance on the ice.  Yet many parents, players, and coaches fail to take the mental aspect of hockey into account.  My recently published book, 7 Pre-Game Habits of Pro Hockey Players, expands on specific techniques and exercises that pros use to prepare themselves physically and mentally for games including: Visualization, Breathing, Controlling Your Emotions, Stretching, Games (hockey-specific for player development), Nutrition, and Routines. Every chapter can be used for quick preparation in the locker room or read together for an all encompassing overview for players and coaches.

My unique insights come from a place close to the game. Before a career-ending injury, I played collegiately at Notre Dame, as well as for the USA National Team in the 2000 World Junior Tournament. I also had the opportunity to observe my dad, former Islanders great Lorne Henning, who has spent 40 years in professional hockey and won four Stanley Cups as a player and coach. If you want more information on the book or to purchase it go to www.hockeypregamebook.com

Hockey is… more than just a sport. It is a way for kids to learn many of life’s lessons. They learn the value of hard work and team work. They learn that to be successful one needs to work. They learn the value of friends and team mates. As a coach ( I am an Assistant Coach my Daughter’s Female Bantam team and am Head coach for my son’s Peewee Team) it gives me a chance to work together with my kids towards a common goal. It gives me a chance to relive the joys and excitement I had when I was a young hockey player and share them with my kids and their team mates. Hockey brings families together, when a young player phones up their grand parents to tell them of an accomplishment, or when the grand parents, aunts uncles and parents come out to cheer the player on. It is a common thread that runs through many generations.

Hockey is a way of life……….. it’s about respect, confidence, team building, fitness as well as the unbelieveable networking that comes with it when we think about it. Hockey truley is a way of life that we may not realize or understand until we are older.

Peter Masson Says:
February 10th, 2010 a28 12:15pm

Hockey, is life… it’s that smell when you walk into an arena, the feeling you get when you see a clean pad of ice and want to go out and scratch it up. It’s a part of who we are, it’s in our blood.

Sara Says:
February 10th, 2010 a28 12:25pm

Hockey is a release from the pressures of the world we live in. When you step into that rink, nothing else matters. The rink is your sanctuary. When you walk into the sanctuary, nothing else matters – only hockey. When something in life isn’t going right or you just can’t handle everything that’s going on, hockey will always be there. The adrenaline you get from playing is better than any drug or therapy that would help you deal with what is going on in your life. Hockey is more than just a game. It’s a way of living that, for just those sixty minutes, is a lot better than the life you lead outside of the rink. Hockey can give you whatever you are looking for; it only matters what you are willing to give to the game that will determine what you get out of it. Hockey is the best aspect of my life.

JIM Says:
February 10th, 2010 a28 12:29pm

hockey is filling a void in your life that only you, yourself can place the value on. The game by nature is an ever changing enviroment of recognizable patterns , yet it lends itself well to those individuals that bore easily and seldom tire. It is the freedom to be outside of your present life if only for a brief moment in time. It is a dream come to life , in a childs heart. A heart still young no matter what the age.

Matthew Koenig Says:

Brad Toews Says:

HOCKEY is the reason we look forward to getting off work at the office and start our real day….at the rink.

Rick Vaile Says:
February 10th, 2010 a28 12:48pm

hockeys is a game of fun and skill where everyone involved learns something new just about everyday they are at the rink. Hockey is spending time with the family and fFriends. Hockey is being there when they need help, to see all the smiles when something great happens. or console when something not so good happens. Hockey is teaching and learning respect for the game on the ice as well as taking that respect and applying it to off ice life. Hockey is a great way to teach and learn life lessons that will arise when we get older.Hockey is a way to stay in shape and stay active. Hockey is plain and simply the best game in the world
with some of the best people and role models I have ever met. Without Hockey my life would have never been as great as it has been. Thank You Hockey and to all the people who have help make me who I am today.
Regards,
Coach Rick Vaile

Hockey is learning about life; it is learning to work with others toward a team goal; it is learning to do your best right up to the final whistle; it is learning to achieve goals with humility and not achieve them with dignity; it is getting right back up when you fall down; it is learning that an assist is better than a goal!

Hockey is the beauty of skating combined with the athletic ability of ice hockey. It provides people of all ages to make life ling friends, visit new places, and learn lessons in life. It affords all individuals to become better not only physically, but as a person. The lessons learned on the ice, trust, leadership, communication, team building, happiness and the agony of defeat provide the individual with experiences that can be used anywhere in life. Hockey is…Waking up on a cold morning when it’s still dark, getting out into the cold crisp air and feeling invigorated and ready to drop the puck.
Hockey is…Sitting in a snow bank and lacing up skates as quick as you can so as not to miss a minute of play.
Hockey is…The crunching sound of the pond ice under your skates with each stride.
Hockey is…The energy and passion put into the game warming the body and the heart to overcome the cold. A love and passion so strong it erases pain and temperature.
Hockey is…The sound of skate blades digging into the ice on a hard stop and spraying snow up to the glass.
Hockey is…The crisp crack of a hard tape-to-tape pass or a slap shot, the boom of a puckoff the boards, the thud of the goalie’s pads making a save.
Hockey is…The Atom taking his first steps on the ice, the Mite beginning to build a stride, the Squirt working on crossovers, the PeeWee working on crossunders, The Bantam working through a check, the Midget working on a goal celebration.
Hockey is…The flutter of the jersey as a player hits full stride.
Hockey is…The smell of hot chocolate and coffee as you enter the rink, the smell of steel as skates are sharpened in the pro shop, the sound of the skates being run across the wheel.
Hockey is…An Atom or Mite parent trying to decide if they need a right or left-handed stick, the Squirt or PeeWee picking a stick because it looks good, or the advanced player checking our a curve and flex of a stick.
Hockey is…A coaches whistle resonating through an empty rink at practice, coaches yelling, “Keep your head up, move the puck or Skate!”
Hockey is…About generations growing in the game, the toddler on the pond with his dad or mom, parenets supporting their young player, the young adult finally being old enough to join their parent d in the adult league.
Hockey is…About life lessons like hard work, practice, dedication, perseverance and passion equating to success. It’s not about falling or getting knocked down, but about how quick you get up and get back in the play.
Hockey is…About giving back the passion and love the game has given. A young adult coming back to coach Atoms or Mites, a parent coaching his child’s team and players becoming referees.
Hockey is…A toddler’s delight at sliding a puck into an empty net, a young player lifting the puck over the goalie or getting their slapshot into the air for the first time. It’s the first successful spinarama, or toe drag between the legs. It’s the joy at learning to pick up the puck on the blade of the stick and doing the “Michigan Move”. It’s the middle-aged player scoring and thinking, “I still got it”, its the older player scoring and wondering how many more of their shots will beat the goalie. The young goalie contorting to make an unbelievable save, the older goalie struggling to get up to make another.
Hockey is…Gordie, The Rocket, Boom Boom, The Golden Jet, The Golden Brett, The Great One, Mario, Ovie and Sid The Kid. It’s Pit, Toe, Punch, Mud, Pie, Chief, The Big M, Stemmer, The Hammer, The Hound, Bugsy, Mule and The Captain. Its Cheesy, Chico, The Bulin Wall, Olie the Goalie and Mr. Zero.
Hockey is…Offside, icing, faceoffs, line changes, pulling the goalie, the goalline, the blueline and thered line. Its the crease, the circles and the dot. Its touch up, waving off, whistling the play, no goal, jumping the boards, flying down the wing, a pass up the wall, using the boards, dumping, chipping, toe-dragging, dipsy-do, wristers, slappers, backhanders, forehanders and loose pucks. It’s losing and edge, losing a lid, lacing them up, strapping them on, breaking a twig, or bringing down the lumber. It’s hitting the post, the pipe or firing one off the glass.
Hockey is…Honor, respect and dedication. The post-game hand shake.
Hockey is…Simply the most exciting sport on the earth. A lifelong passion!

February 11th, 2010 a28 9:39am

Hockey is very important to me. Hockey is me! I love to play it. It is something that I know is good for my body and my mind.
I have learned alot of things by playing hockey. Not only have I learned how to play the game of hockey but I have also learned many lessons.

I have learned that to be a “great hockey player” I must be a team player and not just the leading goal scorer. I know that my teammates have alot of respect for me because I do what is expected of me from my team and from my coach. It makes me feel good when I choose to pass to the lead man to score instead of “hogging” the puck just to prove that I can score. I know that I need to play for my team and not just for myself.

My life is good because of what hockey has taught me. I play my hardest and I play as a part of a whole team. I know that I am well liked because of this. This is how I try to live my life outside of the rink, in school, and at home. I pitch in to help out at home and I am always there for my friends if they need me. Whether I am helping out as a part of my family, as part of my group of friends, or as a part of my hockey team, I know that I always need to work well with others.

I learned that hard work on the ice is like hard work at school. When I play hard on the ice, I feel better at the end of the game whether we win or lose. When I work hard at school I know that I am learning alot of good things for when I am older and go to college. If I put all my best effort into my work I know that I will get a pretty good shot of getting something good out of it.

In the future, I believe that I will be whatever I want to be because of what hockey has taught me. I know that I have to work hard to get things done. Hockey made me see that I have to trust people, be generous, and always help people who need it without expecting anything back. Hockey has taught me lessons that have made me a good person and these things that I have learned will let me do anything I want in my life.

Hockey is like every other sport which makes the world what it is and what is should be and why we should try to keep one on those sports dearest to our hearts. It keeps us young and teaches us many aspects of life which we would not learn in the same manner. If we could replace war with battles of sports of any kind then we would accomplish world peace. We can play every sport in the world with each other, but we can’t find a solution to war. Maybe it’s time to turn war into a large paintball battle and stop the killing of mankind. Teach every country how to play hockey and have bigger olympics to promote peace through our favorite sport. Hockey like many other sports is not just a game to some, but a life and a way to make up for the terrible things we see every day. My hockey goes on and on and when my kids are done playing and no longer in minor hockey, i will still be there because my life has been built around the game.

kurt Says:
