Bulldogs squeak by Marlies in Newfoundland 12/31/69

Hamilton fell behind by a pair of goals but battled back to eventually take a 4-3 win in overtime over Toronto in preseason action on Sunday at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Chad Anderson netted the game-winner for the Bulldogs at 3:44 of the extra session. Hamilton’s Yanick Lehoux scored twice in regulation, and Olivier Latendresse also lit the lamp.


Segal tallies four goals as Norfolk cruises to victory 12/31/69

Brandon Segal (pictured) netted four goals by the 2:55 mark of the third period as the Norfolk Admirals cruised past the visiting Philadelphia Phantoms, 7-1, on Saturday in preseason action at the Scope Arena. Paul Szczechura added a pair of goals for the Admirals, and Chris Lawrence added a single marker. Mitch Fadden chipped in three assists in the winning effort.

Ryan Shannon, a man of many moves, got his first big break of the season last month when the Vancouver Canucks pulled their own zig-zag on him. As training camp drew near, the Canucks could see he was tilting more toward being a depth player again. So they decided that freeing the talented sparkplug was better than burying him: They sent him to the Ottawa organization.


Anisimov's hat trick propels Wolf Pack over Tigers 12/31/69

Second-year forward Artem Anisimov struck for a hat trick and Martin Houle made 24 saves for a shutout in his first Hartford Wolf Pack appearance as the Wolf Pack downed the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by a score of 7-0 on Friday in American Hockey League preseason action at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, Conn. Mike Taylor added a goal and two assists in the win.


Crunch surge past Amerks in preseason opener 12/31/69

Rookie Kirill Starkov (pictured) tallied a pair of goals and Dan LaCosta made 25 saves on 27 shots as host Syracuse defeated arch-rival Rochester, 5-2, on Thursday at the Onondaga County War Memorial. Petr Pohl and John Hughes also potted goals for the Crunch...  Elsewhere, Peoria edged Quad City in a shotoout, 2-1, and Toronto doubled up Manitoba, 4-2.


Petruzalek helps River Rats rally past Sound Tigers 12/31/69

Jakub Petruzalek posted a four-point night as Albany recovered from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 5-3 win over visiting Bridgeport on Wednesday at the Times Union Center in the 2008 preseason opener for both clubs. Petruzalek (pictured) tallied a goal and three assists for the River Rats, while Yannick Tifu and Nicolas Blanchard each scored twice in the victory.


Capitals' Bourque makes bid for an NHL berth 12/31/69

Chris Bourque is not going to let two straight strong preseason showings give him a false sense of confidence or security. He knows he hasn’t really done anything yet. The son of Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Raymond Bourque, the younger Bourque is now on the cusp of achieving his goal of playing in the NHL, but he knows two preseason efforts are just a start.


Islanders add former AHL All-Star Pock 12/31/69

The New York Islanders, parent club of the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, have claimed defenseman Thomas Pock off waivers from the New York Rangers. Pock has played in 59 career NHL games and has recorded 14 points (7-7-14). A 2006 AHL All-Star, Pock has recorded 112 points (23-89-112) and a plus-40 rating in 195 career AHL games, all with the Hartford Wolf Pack. 


Rookies Dubuc, Bouchard shine as Bears post 5-4 win 12/31/69

Rookies Michael Dubuc and Francois Bouchard combined for three goals and five points as the Hershey Bears opened their 2008 preseason slate with a 5-4 home-ice victory over Norfolk on Sunday afternoon at the Giant Center. Sean Collins and Ben Boudreau also scored for the Bears, who will play a home-and-home set against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton next weekend.


Cabana paces Phamtoms over Norfolk, 5-2 12/31/69

Frederik Cabana recorded two goals and an assist the Philadelphia Phantoms used an offensive onslaught to record their third consecutive preseason victory, 5-2, over the Norfolk Admirals in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Polonia Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Northeast Philadelphia on Saturday night. David Laliberte, Boyd Kane, and Chase Watson also scored in the win.


Penguins open preseason with 2-1 win in Binghamton 12/31/69

Rookies Nino Musitelli and Elgin Reid were credited with goals as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 2-1 win over the Binghamton Senators in preseason action on Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Goaltender Adam Berkhoel, who signed as a free agent in the offseason, stopped all 14 shots he faced for the Penguins.


Stevenson, Pavelec lead Thrashers to preseason win 12/31/69

Grant Stevenson scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Atlanta Thrashers to a 4-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night in the NHL preseason opener for both teams. After backstopping the Chicago Wolves to the Calder Cup championship in 2008, Ondrej Pavelec (pictured) played the entire game for the Thrashers and finished with 36 saves.

Playing with your brother at a high level of hockey is a chance that comes along once in a lifetime, if it all. Two years ago, Mark Santorelli had that chance in his hand and tossed it away. He was set to join his older brother, Mike (pictured), at Northern Michigan University, but at the last second veered off to play for Chilliwack of the WHL. Now he may have another chance.


Wolves sign defenseman Alex Brooks 12/31/69

The AHL’s Chicago Wolves have signed defenseman Alex Brooks to a contract for the 2008-09 season. The blueliner collected a professional career-high eight assists and 90 penalty minutes in 70 AHL games with the Peoria Rivermen last season, and he shows 416 penalty minutes and 36 points in 355 career AHL games with Albany, Lowell, and Peoria.


Maroon, Ratchuk help Phantoms past Devils again 12/31/69

Patrick Maroon and Michael Ratchuk both scored for the second time in as many games as the Philadelphia Phantoms registered a 4-1 preseason win over the Lowell Devils on Tuesday afternoon in Newark, N.J. Patrick Maroon scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Philadelphia Phantoms a 3-2 win over the Lowell Devils on Monday afternoon at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J., in the AHL’s 2008 preseason opener. Cup-winning GM Harkness passes away at 89 12/31/69

Ned Harkness, who helped bring the American Hockey League to Glens Falls and served as general manager of the Red Wings' 1981 Calder Cup championship, has died. Harkness, who also served as head coach and GM of the Detroit Red Wings and who won NCAA titles as a head coach at RPI and Cornell, died in Rochester on Friday -- his 89th birthday.


Ducks' Mikkelson ready for the big stage 12/31/69

Sticking on a National Hockey League roster for any young prospect is tough in itself. Trying to hold down a spot among the Anaheim Ducks’ defense, a group containing a bevy of experience and future Hall-of-Famers, is a much taller order. But that’s the hand Brendan Mikkelson will be dealt starting Saturday with the opening of training camp at Anaheim ICE.


Flyers ink goaltender Aubin to one-year deal 12/31/69

The Philadelphia Flyers, parent club of the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms, announced today that they have signed goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin to a one-year contract. Aubin, who is 80-83-16 with a 2.93 GAA in 218 career NHL games, went 6-4-0 with a 2.02 GAA in 12 regular-season AHL games last season before backstopping Portland to the Eastern Conference Finals.
