Bruins Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) 10/06/08

Obviously, every team wants to get off to a good start and hopes to put itself in solid position for the rest of the season. But for the 2008-09 Bruins, a good start figures to be even more important than it is with other teams.

The B's are trying to build on the momentum of last year's playoffs, their first since 2004. No, they didn't go deep. Heck, they didn't even make it past the first round. But they did get there, and once they were there, they faced a 3-1 deficit against the rival Canadiens and almost came all the way back. In doing so, they finally grabbed some of the attention in a town loaded with champions in the three other major sports.

They weren't all the way back, but they were there.

Now, they have to stay there—and they know it.

Phil Kessel and Patrice Bergeron scored shootout goals, carrying the Boston Bruins to a 5-4 win against the Washington Capitals on Sunday night that wrapped up each team's preseason schedule. Alex Ovechkin had Washington's only successful try in the shootout. Boston goalie Manny Fernandez stopped Michael Nylander to open the shootout, and then sealed the win with a save on Alexander Semin's try.

Jonathan Sim tipped home a shot by defenseman Thomas Pock with 6:01 left Saturday, lifting the New York Islanders to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins in a preseason game. Sim scored his second goal of the preseason as the Islanders raised their record to 4-2 with their second win over the Bruins.

Patrice Brisebois had a goal and two assists as the Montreal Canadiens scored three power-play goals in the second period of a 3-1 preseason victory over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. Brisebois got his first goal in two games and assisted on goals by Alex Kovalev and Guillaume Latendresse as the Canadiens scored three times with the man advantage on Boston goalie Manny Fernandez.

Michael Ryder scored with 14 minutes left in the third period and the Boston Bruins beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in a preseason game Friday night. Tuukka Rask of the Bruins had 23 saves against the reigning Stanley Cup champions. Derek Meech's power-play goal at 2:40 of the third period brought the Red Wings into a 1-1 tie.

Boston forward Patrice Bergeron had a goal and three assists in his first game since suffering a severe concussion almost 11 months ago as the Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens 8-3 in a preseason game Monday night.
