Ray Whitney and Eric Staal both scored to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-0 win over the Nashville Predators on Sunday in the final preseason game for both teams. Whitney gave Carolina a 1-0 lead with 12:41 left after he got to a rebound of Patrick Eaves' shot in the slot and sent the puck past Dan Ellis, who stopped 26 of 27 shots.

The Carolina Hurricanes signed first-round draft pick Zach Boychuk to a three-year entry contract worth more than $2.6 million at the NHL level. Boychuk will make $787,500 per season in the NHL or $65,000 at the minor league level in the deal announced Saturday. He also receives a $262,500 signing bonus.

Eric Staal scored two goals and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Nashville Predators 4-2 Thursday night in a preseason game. Brandon Sutter and Ryan Bayda also scored for Carolina. Joel Ward and Vernon Fiddler had the Predators' goals. Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, scoring twice in less than a minute against Dan Ellis.

Jeff O'Neill has ended his NHL comeback bid with the Carolina Hurricanes. He notified the team of his decision after Sunday's exhibition win over Philadelphia. Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford said it's difficult for a player who sat out for a season to return to the league, but that O'Neill looked fine in training camp.

Michael Leighton stopped 21 shots and the Carolina Hurricanes won for the first time in four preseason games with a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. Leighton, who's expected to be Carolina's No. 2 goalie, made nine saves in the third period. He has stopped 36 of 37 shots in two preseason outings.



Richards lifts Flyers over Hurricanes, 4-2 (AP) 09/27/08

Mike Richards scored two short-handed goals to lead the Flyers to a 4-2 preseason victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday in Philadelphia's final game at the Spectrum. Braydon Coburn had a goal and an assist and Joffrey Lupul also scored for the Flyers. Matt Murley and Patrick Eaves scored for the Hurricanes, who are winless in three preseason games.


Washington beats Carolina for 2nd straight night (AP) 09/25/08

Alex Ovechkin got two goals and an assist, and Michael Nylander added two goals to help the Washington Capitals rally for a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in a preseason game Thursday night. This was the second straight night the two Southeast Division rivals met. The Capitals scored a 4-1 victory over the Hurricanes Wednesday in Raleigh.

Tomas Fleischmann scored twice and the Washington Capitals got their exhibition season off to a good start with a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night. Matt Bradley and Mathieu Perreault also scored and Viktor Kozlov added two assists for the Capitals. Defenseman Joni Pitkanen scored with a two-man advantage for the Hurricanes.
