After insisting Cristobal Huet and Nikolai Khabibulin would form the most expensive goaltending tandem in the NHL, general manager Dale Tallon changed his mind and put Khabibulin on waivers. No other NHL club claimed him, so now that issue is tantamount to how the Hawks will start the season.

Khabibulin, who was the highest-paid player in franchise history when he signed a four-year, $27 million contract after leading the Tampa Bay Lightning to the 2004 Stanley Cup, could be used in a trade. No teams wanted to absorb the $6.7 million remaining on his contract when the Hawks put him on waivers, however.
