There's a gleam in coach Ken Hitchcock's eyes these days as the start of the Blue Jackets' eighth season draws nearer.

After an offseason roster overhaul, the Blue Jackets could have eight or more new faces in the lineup when they open the season Oct. 10 in Dallas.

And the new faces are to Hitchcock's liking, just as general manager Scott Howson planned when he set about to reshape a roster that boasts perennial All-Star winger Rick Nash but little else.

"Everybody knows who the top teams in the West are," Hitchcock told The Columbus Dispatch. "And they're not going to go away.

"But that next group of teams... we're right there with them now. There's no reason we can't compete with them and play with them."
