With a deep and talented roster, the Red Wings felt no urgency to make a big splash in free agency last summer, but the Stanley Cup champions did not rest on their laurels. They made a strong roster that much more dominant by signing right wing Marian Hossa to a one-year, $7.45 million contract. And if there were any doubt as to their seriousness of wanting to repeat, it was answered on that day.

Recent Cup champions have had trouble retaining all of their players. The Red Wings have a unique problem: too many NHL-caliber players and not enough roster spots or salary cap space to keep them all. Jan Mursak and Nicklas Kronwall also scored for Detroit (5-1-2), a 5-3 winner over the Maple Leafs (2-5-1) on Friday night in Detroit.
