The Oilers haven't been this confident heading into a season in a very long time.

After finishing 13th and 9th in the Western Conference the last two years, the club will begin its 30th anniversary season with the mindset that anything short of a playoff spot will be an abject failure.

There's good reason for optimism. A team that almost snuck into the post-season last year is better at virtually every position this year.

They acquired some key veterans on forward and defense, they've got their injured players back and they've seen enough in the kids who spearheaded their 14-5-1 stretch drive to believe they can do it again.

Marc Pouliot scored the deciding goal in a shootout and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 in exhibition play Thursday night. Mathieu Garon made 30 saves to help Edmonton improve to 1-1-2 and avenge a 3-2 shootout loss to Florida (2-1-0) on Wednesday night in Edmonton. "It was a mental health win," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said.

Jason Krog's shootout goal proved to be the winner and the Vancouver Canucks knocked off the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in a shootout in the opening preseason game for both teams Monday night. With the shootout tied 1-1, Krog scored to give Vancouver a 2-1 lead. Ales Hemsky had a last chance for the Oilers, but he was stopped by Cory Schneider.
