The positive part about finishing last in the Western Conference is that things can only improve.

Those looking for bright spots within the Kings can cling to that, but probably not much else this season. The Kings are even younger than 2007-08's last-place team and figure to struggle similarly this season.

With strong teams such as Anaheim, Dallas and San Jose residing in the Pacific Division, the Kings, who have missed the playoffs in every season since 2002, certainly won't be favored to end that drought.

There is, however, hope. It comes in the form of a strong group of prospects that is starting to take a foothold in Los Angeles, particularly among what should be a young group on defense.

Todd McLellan's new system is taking a while for the San Jose Sharks to learn. The Sharks closed out their first preseason under McLellan with a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday night. San Jose scored less than a minute into the game and then added two goals 53 seconds apart late in the second period.

Chris Pronger scored his first two goals of the preseason, including the game-winner 3:04 into overtime, giving the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. Chris Kunitz scored the deciding goal in the shootout to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. Kunitz, the Ducks' second shooter, moved around a poke check by goalie Jason LaBarbera for the shootout's only goal. Jonas Hiller stopped all three shooters he faced to secure the win for Anaheim (3-1-1).



Kings acquire O'Donnell from Ducks (AP) 09/30/08

The Los Angeles Kings acquired defenseman Sean O'Donnell from the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, receiving a conditional selection in the 2009 NHL draft in return. The 36-year-old O'Donnell played for the Kings from 1994-2000. Heading into his 14th NHL season, he has appeared in a combined 932 games with Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix, Boston, New Jersey and Minnesota.
