Oct. 9 -- 2008-09 NHL regular season begins in North America. Nov. 8 -- Hockey Hall of Fame Game, Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs. Nov. 10. -- Hockey Hall of Fame induction, Toronto. Dec. 1 -- Signing deadline for Group 2 free agents. Dec. 19-27 -- Holiday roster freeze in effect. No waivers, trades and loans permitted.

In a city where the expectations are always high, there's a special buzz surrounding the Canadiens as they prepare for the 2008-09 season. The team will be celebrating the franchise's 100th birthday, and the goal is to win the team's 25th Stanley Cup.

The Canadiens' last Cup win was in 1993, and the team hasn't advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs since then. But the team's first-place finish in the Eastern Conference regular-season standings last season and some key offseason acquisitions have produced an air of confidence in Montreal.

"We always put expectations on ourselves," said general manager Bob Gainey. "A lot of people wrote us off last year, but we thought we had a good team.

Niklas Backstrom stopped 25 shots and Stephane Veilleux had a goal and an assist in the Minnesota Wild's 3-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night in the final NHL preseason game for both teams. Marian Gaborik and Antii Miettinen also scored for Minnesota, which finished with a 5-2-0 record.

Patrice Brisebois had a goal and two assists as the Montreal Canadiens scored three power-play goals in the second period of a 3-1 preseason victory over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. Max Pacioretty and Robert Lang scored in the shootout to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 preseason win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
