Senators Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) 10/06/08

It's too early for another goaltending controversy to be taking any serious roots in Ottawa. But seeds for one were certainly planted in Sweden.

A day after Martin Gerber cost the team a point by allowing three bad goals in a 4-3 overtime loss, Alex Auld stopped 30 shots in his debut as a Senator for the team's first win.

Auld was particularly sharp in the second period, kicking aside 15 Pittsburgh Penguin chances. He lost his shutout bid with two seconds left in the game.

Auld, who was signed in the off season to replace Ray Emery and serve as Gerber's backup, is a 27-year-old veteran who has had success as the last line of defense on a solid team. Gerber, who is in the last year of a three-year free agent contract, has never found in Canada the form he showed as...

This was hardly a routine win for Daniel Alfredsson. Playing an NHL regular-season game in his native Sweden and skating off with his Ottawa Senators teammates after a satisfying victory could be a once-in-a-lifetime event. "This is an experience that I'll always remember and which I'm going to rank among the highlights in my career," Alfredsson said after helping the Senators to a 3-1 win over the...
