Flyers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) 10/06/08

Gone from their blue line are aging defensemen Jason Smith, signed by Ottawa as a free agent, and Derian Hatcher, placed on long-term injury because of chronic knee pain.

Gone from their core group of forwards is R.J. Umberger, who scored a team-high 10 playoff goals before getting traded to Columbus in a salary dump.

For the first time in years, the Flyers were more interested in shedding salary than adding big-name free agents over the summer and are counting on some familiar and not-so-familiar faces to carry the load this season as they try to build on last year's surprise trip to the conference final.

Up front, two-time 40-goal scorer Simon Gagne is looking to rebound from three concussions that kept him out of 57 regular-season games and the entire...
