The Coyotes are in much better shape than they were a year ago at this time.

Then they were searching for respectability, which they achieved with a playoff bid and a winning record. Now the bar is set higher. Anything short of a playoff spot would be a major disappointment.

Numerous reasons point to why they should be better—the addition of a high-powered sniper in center Olli Jokinen, second-year players such as forwards Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal and Daniel Carcillo who played important roles last season—but maybe the most important is that a winning atmosphere has engulfed the organization.

No one is expecting miracles, since a lot of superior work will have to be turned in by the defense, which will enter the season under the biggest...

Teemu Selanne scored three goals to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-1 preseason victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night. Selanne, the Ducks' all-time leading scorer, capped the hat trick with the game's final goal with 17:14 left in the third period. Brendan Morrison and Scott Niedermayer both had three assists for the Ducks (5-1-1), who have won three straight preseason games.

The Phoenix Coyotes sent rookie right wing Alex Bourret to their AHL affiliate in San Antonio on Wednesday and waived rookie defenseman Ryan Lannon and veteran center Mike Zigomanis. The moves left 27 players on the Coyotes' training camp roster heading into Friday night's preseason game at Anaheim. Joe Thornton scored with 3:03 into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 4-3 preseason victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night. Devin Setoguchi of the Sharks tied the game midway through the third period, just over a minute after Garth Murray had given the Coyotes a 3-2 lead. Peter Mueller scored three goals and rookie Mikkel Boedker added two goals in the Phoenix Coyotes' 5-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Monday night. Mueller scored his hat trick entirely in the second period. After wristing a shot past Brian Boucher at 6:19, he converted on Daniel Winnik?s centering pass 49 seconds later.

Francois Beauchemin scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and David LeNevue stopped 26 shots in the Anaheim Ducks' 3-1 exhibition victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night. Travis Moen and Troy Bodie also scored for the Ducks (2-1-0). Daniel Carcillo scored for the Coyotes (0-4-0).

Michael Cammalleri and Andre Roy each scored for the Calgary Flames in a 3-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night. Matthew Lombardi also scored for the Flames (2-1-0). Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all nine shots he faced in his first action of the preseason before being replaced in net midway through the second by Curtis McElhinney, who finished with 13 saves.
