The Blues' chances of returning to the playoffs took a major hit with news that prized defenseman Erik Johnson would miss the entire 2008-09 season with torn knee ligaments.

The Blues were keying on Johnson boosting the power play and improving the point production from the blue line—two areas that were lacking last season—but now they'll have to find help elsewhere.

"That's a huge blow for us," Blues forward Lee Stempniak said. "The second half of last year, he was really coming into his own. You could tell he was a lot more confident with the puck, making easy plays but also jumping in (the rush). He was going to be a really big asset for our power play, let alone five-on-five and the penalty kill.

McDonald scores again, Blues beat Thrashers 4-1 (AP) 10/04/08
