Capitals Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) 10/06/08 Simply put, the Capitals should be able to contend for the Stanley Cup this season.
They have some of the best young offensive and defensive threats in the NHL, all of whom now have some experience at the top level and are ready to push the Caps even higher than their Southeast Division title last season.
Alex Ovechkin was the league's top player last year and should be even better this season. He works with players like Nicklas Backstrom (one of the league's top rookies and a marvelous playmaker). Alexander Semin is blossoming, and the Caps will gladly look forward to the return of key veterans Michael Nylander and Chris Clark.
The Caps also easily adjusted to new coach Bruce Boudreau's tough forechecking style last season.
Kessel, Bergeron score in shootout for Bruins' win (AP) 10/05/08
Phil Kessel and Patrice Bergeron scored shootout goals, carrying the Boston Bruins to a 5-4 win against the Washington Capitals on Sunday night that wrapped up each team's preseason schedule. Alex Ovechkin had Washington's only successful try in the shootout. Boston goalie Manny Fernandez stopped Michael Nylander to open the shootout, and then sealed the win with a save on Alexander Semin's try.
NHL Capsules (AP) 10/05/08 Wade Redden and Scott Gomez each scored second-period goals and the New York Rangers rallied to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 Sunday to sweep their two-game, season-opening series in Europe. The Lightning had only three shots on goal in the opening period, but went up 1-0 when Adam Hall scored after Henrik Lundqvist partially blocked Andrej Meszaros' shot with 1:43 remaining.
Sid the Kid and Alex the Great lead NHL youth (AP) 10/04/08 Martin Brodeur relaxed in the middle of a midtown Manhattan hotel and marveled at the NHL talent walking past. It wasn't so much the number of fine hockey players that impressed him on preseason media day, it was their youth. "I was young at one point and I was doing the same thing," the 36-year-old New Jersey Devils goalie said.
Ovechkin has goal, 2 assists for Capitals (AP) 10/03/08
Alex Ovechkin scored a short-handed goal and added two assists to lead the Washington Capitals to a 5-1 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night. Ovechkin was the NHL's MVP last season when he led the league with 65 goals and 112 points. He has kept up the scoring this preseason, with four goals and seven points in three games.
Fedorov spends time on defense at Caps practice (AP) 10/02/08 Sergei Fedorov has scored 472 regular-season goals, earned an MVP award and won three Stanley Cups as an NHL forward. Yet there he was at the Washington Capitals' practice Thursday, putting in work as a defenseman. A late-career position switch for the 38-year-old? Not quite. More like a bit of an insurance policy for the Capitals, who perhaps could carry one fewer true defenseman on the roster if...
