Neutral Zone Transition Skating/Passing Progression

Diagrams

Description

4-Dot Passing Drill:
Opposite corners start by passing to the line across from them. Then the passer skates the pattern shown and pivots "open" facing the puck and gets return pass, then goes in for a shot.

Swedish 2-touch NZ Transition:
X1 and X2 Regrouping on X3.
X1 passes to X3
X3 one-touch back to X1, then X1 one-touch back to X3
X3 one-touch to X2, then X2 one-touch back to X3.
X1 and X2 skate pattern shown with open-pivot to face X3.
X3 to X2, then rink-wide to X1.
X1 and X2 attack goalie 2v0.

Important to come back low enough so that pass is fairly flat and you don't have to look back over your shoulder for the return pass.

The green shows the route to line to join after the shot.

Notes: The drill works on transition skating. Players should develop the ability to make this change in direction smoothly and carry their speed through it.

One-touch "bump" passes in the 2nd progression need to be flat on the ice and accurate.
