Defence Retrieval to Breakout

Diagrams

Description

This drill can take place on both sides of the ice at the same time. On the whistle, the coach dumps the puck, and the defence skates forward from the goal line to the faceoff dot, pivots backward, and retrieves the puck from the corner. They skate with speed and choose a breakout option. Option 1 is the half-wall winger and option 2 is the low curling centre.

Progress to a defence-to-defence pass behind the net (i.e. reverse) for quick movement of the puck from strong to weak side.

Notes: Coaches and add pressure to force decisions.
