Defensive Zone Coverage: Sagging Zone

Diagrams

Description

RD is pressuring/forcing the puck down low, with C covering the strong side post, and LD covering the weak side post. RW is covering the winger and defenseman, by positioning himself at the top of the circle. LW is the 'sag' position, who covers the winger out front, and also anticipates the crosss ice pass out of the corner to the Defenseman. (Red) If the puck squirts out towards the other side, LD will pressure/force the puck down low, with C sliding into LD's position (Strong side post), as well RD will slide into the weak side post position vacated by C. LW will position himself at the top of the left circle covering both the winger and the defenseman. RW slides into the 'sag position' covering the winger out front. (Blue) If the puck is moved to the Defenseman on the left side, the LW will pressure/force the puck, with the RW sagging high anticipating a D to D pass, the C moves into the high slot covering the winger out front, RD remains in his weak side post position, and the LD moves close to the strong side post position, anticipating the puck to either be moved out front or back into the corner.

Notes: I really like the risk level of this particular set-up. It is quite aggressive, but by dropping your weak-side winger down into the low slot, you can still maintain great coverage in front of the net.

As players get more comfortable with this system, teach the weak-side winger to anticipate and pick off D to D passes, and cross-ice passes out of the corner. Good, quick wingers will see a lot of breakaways and 2 on 1′s by reading these passes well.

As is the case with the Box +1, “Sagging” Zone Coverage converts very well into a breakout when the transition occurs. The natural positioning for coverage is exactly where the players need to be to initiate the breakout.
