Blue to Blue Pass and Shot

Diagrams

Description

This drill will introduce players to the importance of hard crisp (tape to tape) passes, receiving zones and timing between team mates.

The drill begins with two lines of players on either side of the opposing blue lines. On the whistle X1 & X2 will take strong explosive strides along their blue line. When the players are about to reach the middle of the ice, the player behind each X1 & X2 will make a hard past across the neutral zone to the player skating. X1 & X2 will upon receiving the pass will return a pass to the player who just passed to them. Once both X1 & X2 have completed their pass they will both curl into the neutral heading towards the opposite blue line. Once X1 and X2 are in the receiving zones, they will receive a pass from their original line and explode into the neutral zone, finishing with a shot on goal.

Key talking points for this drill are as follows:
- Although this drill is a great all around skating, passing, shooting drill, the biggest emphasis here is to recognize had what is called receiving zones and the timing in completing the play.
- The two green highlighted areas on the diagram are to serve as where you would like to see your players receive the puck. A true accomplished run of this drill would include either the receiving player calling for the pass, or a distinct motion that they are available to receive the pass.

Attempting to echo a game like situation as much as possible its important that the receiving player has his head up at all times to be prepared for defenders trying to break up the play, or hit the player once he has received his pass. To achieve the greatest results, you would like to see your receiving player accepting the pass with explosive speed through the receiving area and taking strong strides and cross overs to explode into the attacking zone, maintaing speed.
