Description

1. Crossovers & agility: Players in 2 groups. One player from each group skates towards each other performing crossovers around the faceoff circle. Building momentum they continue to the pylon opposite their group line and execute a full 360 tight turn inwards toward the center continuing to the next pylon and performing a second 360 tight turn outwards. Upon reaching the center line each player pivots into backwards c-cuts all the way down the sidelines finishing with a backwards V-stop. Each player should end up in the other group. If time permits try with a puck.
2. Bank pass/Pass & follow: Players in 2 groups. Player in first group skates with puck bank passing the puck off the boards around each pylon and receiving it on the other side of each pylon. Upon picking up the puck past the 3rd pylon, builds up momentum around the pylon outside the blue line and drives in to crash the net with a shot on goal.
Players in second group have one player ready at each pylon to receive a pass. Player makes a stationary pass to the first player and follows or skates to the first pylon. When player receives puck they continue the same movement and pass and follow to the player at the second pylon and so-on. Upon receipt of the final pass by the player at the last pylon, he then makes a drive around the outer pylon in across the blue line crashing the net for a shot on goal.
3. Puckhandling (various): Each player begins puckhandling back and forth in stationary position in front of the body. Then gradually to the complete left side, continuing back and forth toward the center in front of the body and likewise on the right side. Extra challenge would be to have player try to twist as much as possible to puckhandle to the rear and pick up puck quickly on the other side and continue. Puckhandling in front of the body can be varied by alternating with short and long side to side motion. Once these 2 aspects have been exercised, have player perform continuous puckhandling while lifting up one foot off the ice. Encourage bent knees and proper weight shift to leg/skate on the ice.
4. Faking and agility: Players in 2 groups. Players from 1st group each puckhandles performing tight turns around pylons and building speed drives the net for a shot on goal. Players in 2nd group skate with puck faking/shooting the puck underneath the stick through the pylon obstacle and picking it up quickly on the other side. Upon passing the 3rd/final obstacle, player quickly builds speed in across the blue line for a shot on goal.

Notes: Begin with usual warm-up
Core (4 stations)
End with introduction of off-sides. After last station rotation, coaches will move their groups outside their respective station blue lines. One coach will explain briefly what an offside is and involve the kids by asking questions (i.e. demonstrate with other coaches if puck is inside the blue line before the player- no offside, player in before puck is offside). Thereafter separating players into 2 groups outside the blueline. In pairs have each perform passing the puck across the blueline before the player and likewise forcing an offside and having the player inside the blue line before the puck.
This is just the beginnings of getting the kids prepared for this concept in novice. Nothing too major but introducing the notion for starters :)

Tags: 1. Watch for head on collisions when skating towards each. Encourage executing proper crossovers around the faceoff circle. Transition or pivot into backwards skating should be continuous motion and player should not lose momentum. Proper c-cuts on both legs all the way back to the goal line., 2. Group one: Adjust shot/bank pass if possible to allow skating to continue without having to stop/backup and pick up the puck. Watch puck control and two hands on stick. Encourage buildup of speed when driving the net., 3. Proper hockey stance. Knees bent and proper hand position of forehand and back hand on stick while puckhandling. Body should remain stationary when continuously puckhandling on left and right sides of the body. Encourage proper weight shift to leg/foot on ice in order to keep balance when lifting one leg., 4. When going around obstacles encourage speed to avoid delay in picking up puck on either side. On tight turns puckhandling, stick and head lead the body in the intended direction.
