Zone Entry: Cross, Drop & Pass

Drill Diagram

Description

Time:
12 mins (10 mins work / 5 mins both directions / 2 mins rest & demo)
Goalies: in both nets stopping shots and minimizing rebounds.

Description: Red F passes to Black F on the wall. Black F skates into the zone (approx. top of circle) and then cuts back up to the high slot, completing a drop pass to Red F who had skated down the middle and cut outwards to the boards behind Black F. Red F will throw a pass over to Black F in the high slot. Black F will get off either a quick release or one timer shot depending on player’s stick hand. Red F should drive the net for a rebound.

Key Points:
Timing – Red F needs to read Black F’s speed and make sure to cross with speed behind Black F as they enter the zone. Both players need to move with pace so that the 3rd pass to the high slot (Black F) is completed quickly and before Red F crosses the hashmark lines
Passing – Drop pass needs to be stopped and left. It doesn’t need to be “passed”. Make life less stressful and complicated.
Positioning – Black F needs to understand their stick hand. If the puck comes from the right side and the player is left-handed, the shot should be a quick catch and release off the forehand. If the player is right-handed, they will need to pivot backwards opening for a one-timer. This should be “flipped” if the pass is coming from the left side. Red F needs to be mindful of their stick hand as well; on right-side, left-handed players need to pivot their hips, giving them an angle in which to shoot on net and also the angle in which to give a hard forehand pass to Black F in high slot.

Notes: 1. Drill should start at 2on0, progressing to 2on1 w/upside down sticks.
2. Then with normal sticks
*Players can be added, to create a 3on2 situation with a Back-checker.
