1-2-2 Forecheck (NZ Trap)

Drill Diagram

Description

- Single man (F1) pressures D with puck using the inside to out curl. This will invite the D man to make a pass to the winger on the boards. This is where the trap begins to form.

- F2 reads the pass and performs a curl starting slightly back to encourage the winger to move up the boards while starting to take the ice away from him and angles him into the boards for a check. By doing this F2 doesnt allow the player to turn back and will force him into the boards. This must happen well before the RED line, hence Neutral Zone Trap.

- F1 does a similar turn and follows up behind as a support man and also cuts off the pass back to the D.

- F3 again in the centre ice performs a similar curl but should be just in front of the F2 man. F3 will cut off any cross ice pass that may be attempted.

- D will set up slightly wider than normal and manage their gap control. This is critical not to give away excessive ice and make it easy for the attacking team to gain our zone.
