Neutral Zone Re-Group

Drill Diagram

Description

All players face offensive end.

On the whistle forwards skate to the offensive blue line and do a tight turn, D move forward 2 or 3 strides and transition into a backward skate into defensive zone as indicated on the diagram. C and LW follow the puck and curl into a strong position supporting the movement of the puck as shown.

When the D get into the D zone the Coach passes the puck to the LD, LD controls the puck and passes to the RD (tape to tape). Right D controls the puck waits for RW to be in a strong position to receive a pass (if the timing is right this should happen quickly). RD passes the puck to RW on the tape. RW controls the puck and looks for the C and gives him a crisp pass on the tape(if the timing ir right and the C drops low into the D zone the C will come through the middle of the ice with speed). C then decides to either pass the puck to LW or carry the puck into the O zone and either shoot with LW driving the net or pass to LW and drive the net. RW follows the play and stays high in the slot.

Notes: Run the Drill a few times each way so the players understand how to re-group following the puck. Then Coach makes the pass to the D random and have the Forwards react.

Once this is mastered have the D pass to the C when curling to support the puck and so on.

Tags: Neutral zone re-group with D to D pass to spread out the puck and open the ice. Crisp tape to tape passing. wait for forwards in the re-group before moving the puck up the ice.
