Mite Stations - Basic Drills

Drill Diagram

Description

Station 1: Puck Handling

Pucks in corner. X puck handles around cones. Be sure Mites are moving the puck side to side as opposed to shoveling the puck ahead of them. After first Mite clears second pylon, send the next X in line.

Station 2: Passing

Line up Mites in separate lines facing each other. Simply pass puck back n forth. Be sure Mites are using proper technique ( moving stick behind their back foot to get leverage) and hips are shifting left to right prior to sending pass.

Station 3: Competitive Play - Race for Puck

4 Mites line up on goal line. Skate backwards to blue line, turn and skate forward to chase puck which Coach passes out in front of them. Note, it's a 1:1 battle on each side, so coach passes 2 pucks out in front, one for each group. The Mite that gets to puck first must stick handle the puck across the goal line.

Station 4: Competitive Play - 2 vs. 2 (in the circle only).

Mites cannot leave circle and must pass at twice before shooting on net. If puck moves out of circle, the players awaiting their turn can pass the puck back in. High tempo drill. 60 second shifts and then next 4 players go out.

Station 5: Skating

Use Mites' stick as stopping device. X skates to first stick and stops, goes to next stick and stops. Be sure Mites are stopping facing the same direction. After 4th stick, X skates around both pylons and back in line.

Station 6: Shooting

Split Mites into 2 groups. First group shoots on goal, per diagram, while the other shoots against the boards. Good technique here. Be sure Mite is bending his/her knees and shifting hips side to side when releasing the puck. the puck should start on the base of the blade. Once shot is released, be sure their stick is pointing toward the target.
