Defensemen - Read & React Drill

Drill Diagram

Description

These drills helps defensemen determine how to read and react to 3 common forcheck pressures that they often encounter going deep in their zone to initiate a breakout.

1. If the defensemen determines if the forechecker will chase him behind the net to flush him out. He reacts by cutting so close to the net that the forchecker gets hung up on it.
This tactic now gives the defenseman time and space to start the breakout.

2. If the defenseman determines the forchecker is getting the angle on him with pressure on the inside shoulder, making it impossible to use the previous tactic, he can evade the checker by making a quick power turn towards the boards. This will by the defenseman time and space to start the breakout. The defenseman needs to keep his body between the puck and the forchecker.

3. Then if the defenseman reads that the forchecker is going across the front of the net, he performs a stop and turn back (power turn towards the boards) using the net as a screen.
