Back check and Redirections

Drill Diagram

Description

In this drill, we will divide the ice in half to keep more players engaged as much as possible.

On the left side of the ice we will focus on the importance of back checking, quick feet and agility. The drill will start on the whistle with O taking the puck from a coach and stick handling up and around the first cone. O is trying to maintain the most control he can over the puck while keeping his head up, taking strong strides and crossovers as he turns. X will also leave on the same whistle without a puck and will skate around the far pylon. X will focus on strong strides, foot work and attempt to foil the scoring chance.

On the right side of the ice, players will form two lines one at the blue line and the other behind the net. On the whistle the first payer in the line behind the net will receive the puck from the coach and shoot it around the boards to the first player in the line at the blue line. O behind the net will then use an inside left pivot to get in front of the net to attempt to redirect the shot. After the shot is taken, each player will switch to the back of each line. X must focus on good foot work and timing at the blue line when retrieving the puck. When shooting from the blue line X must remember to keep the shot low to allow his team mate to have a chance at a redirection in front.
