Box - Penalty Kill

Diagrams

Description

The basic box formation is the easiest penalty kill formation.
- Ensure that the box is formed with the 2 forwards up top and the 2 D down low.
- Ensure that the puck carrier is contained to the outside area. These are areas of low risk to score a goal.
- Body and stick are blocking inside lanes and also taking away some possible lanes on the outside.
- As the puck moves to the side boards the far top F needs to have his head on a swivel to protect cut off a pass through the house to a driving D from the point.
- As the puck moves to the top D the top 2 forwards will take away the pass through the house and/or block the shot to the net.

Containment needs to stay on the outside where the risk is low to score a goal. No need to chase the puck.
