-if there is a shot on the net, tie up opponents stick 1st and then find the puck 2nd.
Forward on puck side:
-Active stick, deflect or intercept passes to the D-man.
-Don't challenge the puck carrier 1 on 1.
-If the puck carrier in the corner tries to come up the boards and skate to the front of the net force him to stay outside of the box.
-Wait for the other team to make a bad pass and jump on the loose pucks.
Forward away from the puck:
-Active stick, deflect or intercept passes to open forward in the slot.
-Tie up the stick of the forward you are watching if there is a shot on the net.
-Deflect or intercept passes through the box to the D-man.

Notes: Our players are told to be patient and let the other team pass the puck around the outside of our penalty killing box. When the other team makes a pass we look for a chance to get the puck when a bad pass is made or a the receiver has difficultly receiving the pass.

THE MAIN GOAL OUR PENALTY KILL IS TO NOT GET SCORED ON.

The reasons we want the kids to be patient while killing penalties are:
-At this level the other team will most likely have a hard time to make more than 2 good passes before they give up the puck to us.
-If our players are challenging the other teams players 1 on 1 and get beat we will be out numbered in front of our net giving the other team a scoring chance. The other team won't score many goals from the corners or from the outside of the box.
-By playing this type of passive penalty kill the kids will quickly pick up on when to aggressively force the puck carrier and when to contain rather than force.
