Basic Forward Stride

Diagrams     

Description

1) 1-Foot Push/Glide
Push off with R skate, glide on L skate
Bent knees, full extension
Return with push off with L skate, glide on R skate

2) Recovery
Key: Push off skate recovers under skater;
Emphasize point by dragging toe on ice as skater recovers each stride

3) Extension
Key: Full extension of stride leg and recovery;
Emphasize point by dragging toe on ice as skater recovers each stride and then "click" heels before beginning next stride

4) Resistance
Skaters pair up with partner; facing partner with 1 stick held horizontally between skaters, take turns striding forward; partner offers increasing level of resistance

5) Accelaration
Skaters place sticks in a line 2-3 feet apart; skater takes 4-5 quick steps (1 step between each stick), accelerating to full stride

Notes: Spend 2 minutes per practice on each station for total of 10 minutes on skating fundamentals
