5-Man Regroup & Breakout/Break-in

Diagrams

Description

All 5 players begin in the neutalzone. Coach dumps the puck into the left corner. LD gains possession and outlets to the LW along the halfwall at the hash marks. LW headmans the puck to C who has looped around to catch the outlet. All three forwards exit the zone with the C carrying the puck. The forwards then break back into the zone for a 3-on-2. Both D, originally working with the forwards for the re-group, transition backwards to defend against the 3-on-2 breakin

Notes: Coach should alternate dumping the puck into both corners. The drill can also be varied to have the D stop behind the net to wait for the forwards to get into position. On the regroup, the areas to emphasize include: (1) D quickly gaining posession; (2) Stong-side winger getting deep into the zone for the outlet; (3) Quick pass from D to the winger; (4) C curling in deep enough to be in position for the outlet pass from the winger; (5) All three forwards quickly heading out of the zone to prepare for the break-in.
