Description

X's are offensive, O's are defensive.

PRESSURE SCENARIO: First players in each line start on one knee. Coach dumps puck into corner. X is trying to attack the net for a shot while O is using angling tactics to prevent the attack. This phase continues until either O pins X, O gains control/clears puck, or X gets a shot (shown above).

CONTAIN SCENARIO:The same two players reset with X standing in the corner and O in front of the net. Coach passes X a puck and once again X tries to attack the net. O must contain X using proper angling and positioning tactics. The drill ends when either O pins X (shown above), O gains control/clears puck, or X gets a shot.

Players join the back of the other line after drill is complete.

Notes: The first phase is a PRESSURE scenario because X does not have control of the puck, has his back turned to O, and O has only a small gap that he needs to close in order to inflict pressure on X.

The second phase is a CONTAIN scenario because X has control of the puck, is already facing O, and there is a significant gap between the two players.

It is not necessary to designate defence in one line and forwards in the other. It is important to have all players practice their pressure and containment skills.
