4-Corner Warmup
Description
This is a quick warmup skate to get the blood going and skaters working various aspects of their skating. The team is split into 4 corners with balanced numbers as much as possible. A coach will start each series with a whistle, and the first player in each line goes at the same time.
SEQUENCE 1:
Skaters will skate hard from their corner to the opposite end, complete a hard stop in the corner, and do quick step-overs (alternating in front, behind) from the corner to touch the net, then back. They then come to another stop and turn to skate back to the line they started from.
The coach will whistle for the next skater in line to go once the first player has STARTED back towards his end.
SEQUENCE 2:
Skaters will skate to the opposite end and around the faceoff circle, pivoting backwards and forwards at the "12 oclock" and "6 oclock" positions, before returning to their own end and back of the line they started in.
Coaches will start the next players once the last one is headed back towards his original line.
SEQUENCE 3:
Skaters will skate hard out to the center ice faceoff dot, and do a hard pivot backwards, skating backwards to the faceoff dot closest their line, then pivot forward again out to center, then again pivot backwards past the dot and return to the back of their line.
Coaches will whistle to start the next players once the first player is turned towards his line after the second "loop" at center.
Notes: Stress "heads up". When this drill is newer, players need a reminder that there will be players coming back towards them as they progress up ice each time.
For variety, add pucks in and again stress "heads up".
