Inside Out Edge Skating Drill

Diagrams

Description

NOTE: This drill is not skating with a puck. My freehand drawing is poor so the action most appropriate was the skating w/ Puck item.

Simply line up the players in rows and begin working the inside edge and then the outside edge (one skate at a time).

Skates aligned in an "L" shape position. Begin a "C" cut stride with right skate focusing on inside edge. As Right skate completes the "C" cut then begin with Left skate. At center ice, simply have the players skate to the other end.

Same drill on the way back, but this time the players will focus on Outside Edge. Essentially, the player will do a reverse "C" cut. Stop at center ice and have them skate to goal line.

Notes: Key to this is having the players get low, bend their knees and ensure the player is driving his/her edge in to ice forming a tight C turn.

At Squirt/Atom level, I would stop at center ice as I've found the players get tired and get into bad habits.

Outside edge will be the most challenging. Be sure that the player is not leaning to far forward otherwise they will tend to lose his/her balance.
