Time:
18 mins (16 mins work / 2 mins rest & demo)
Goalies: in both nets stopping shots and minimizing rebounds while communicating to players on their team.
Description:
Part 1: Blue F passes up to X
D to D pass and shot on net with F & D battling net front, quick battle if rebound.
Coach makes pass up wall to X who shifts across after shot.
D to D pass and shot on net with F & D still battling.
Part 2: F swings wide towards the coach to collect a pass, D swings outward to the opposite side. 2 X's pivot backwards and play defense against F & D who are attacking 2on2 down to the far end. As F receives the pass, the awaiting F on the half wall and the X behind the goal line can join the rush up ice creating a 3on2 attack w/ a back-checker tracking back up the ice.
Key Points:
Communication/Tracking – Players need to use strong communication throughout this drill. The 2 X’s will benefit greatly from communicating who they are taking and letting the back-checker know who to pick up so that all assignments are covered.
Positioning – keeping the puck to the outside while covering the middle lane and taking away as many passing lanes as possible.
Awareness – need to be able to pick up on switches and transitions by the forwards to open ice or to create deception. Communication & tracking become even more important when variations occur.
Notes: Start drill w/ 2x's flipping sticks after getting the initial shot and stepping back to play defense. Back-checker as well.
Progress to sticks remaining proper for the whole drill.
