This drill was created using HockeyShare.com's Online Drill Drawing & Practice Planning Platform.
Setup:
- Two lines of players (Xs) lineup at center ice circle facing the coach (as shown in the diagram).
- One line of D lineup on the opposite blueline.
- Coach (after a while it will be backcheckers) in the middle of the ice just inside the blue line with the pucks.
Drill:
- On whistle, X1 & X2 skate forwards to the coach and then transition backwards so they're always facing the puck, then transition forwards up the ice. Coach will give one of these players a pass and the two forwards attack in a 2v1 situation.
- On the same whistle, D1 sprints out to center ice and transitions backwards. Player has to read the situation and adjust based on which player has the puck.
After they get this down, will add some urgency to the rush and designate three players (Os in red in diagram) to take turns backchecking. The backcheckers will start just behind the coach and they have to wait until the coach makes the pass. The backchecker needs to skate towards the weak side player.
