Defense Sandwich Defensive Zone Faceoff Coverage

Players line up as shown

Two wingers are the bread, one defense is the meat in the defense sandwich.

Key responsibilities for defensive team

Center tries to win the draw back to the corner - if loses faceoff ties up other center

RW and LW - win or lose, first two strides are fast and towards LD and RD respectively. If draw is lost, continue out to LD and RD, if draw is won, get to the boards for breakout passes

LD - if draw is lost on picture on left, tie up RW and then retreat to front of net

LD - if draw is won on picture on right, pick up puck in corner and initiate breakout by either rimming puck to RW or back up strong side to LW

RD - if draw is lost on picture on left, read faceoff is lost and then immediately get to front of net to provide additional support

RD - if draw is won on picture on right, guard front of net and tie up LW
