Description

One zone breakout to 3 on 2

This is a straight forward drill that can be used to work on different variations of the breakout.

To start, have 2 defense and 3 forwards. Coach will dump the puck in, and the team will break out. Forwards will cross in the neutral zone and then attack the 2 defense 3 on 2.

Let the play go until it looks like it has run its course.

Breakout options include:
- strong side to winger
- strong side to center
- wheel (D skates behind net) to weak side winger
- wheel (D skates behind net) to center
- D to D pass to winger
- D to D pass to center

Key points - C must work on timing to mirror the puck and be a passing option from D and from W
- W must time entry and pivots to be a good option for D pass - try to get it while moving
- D must make a good first pass

Other variations include:
- adding a pass to the coach who will then pass to another player before attacking 3 on 2
- having the coach dump in a 2nd time before the attack

If more than 5 players, rotate extra players in each time.
