Building Your First Playbook

Building Your First Playbook

A playbook keeps your systems, drills, video and notes in one place your team can open on any device. This guide takes you from a blank page to a playbook you can share. Free accounts can create one playbook; Premium accounts can create as many as they need.

Step 1 — Create the playbook

Go to Playbooks → New Playbook.

  • Playbook Title – the only required field, e.g. "Defensive Zone Coverage".
  • Description – a short note on what the playbook covers.
  • Attach to teams – optional. Pick a team and click Add. You can attach more teams later.
  • Enable a public share link – optional. Anyone with the link can view it. You can add a password and an expiration date later.

Click Continue. If you'd rather start from a ready-made playbook, pick one under Start from a template instead.

Step 2 — Add content blocks

The builder opens with a Content Blocks sidebar. Click a block to add it to the end of your playbook, or drag it to the spot you want.

Blocks are grouped into Text, Media, HockeyShare and Layout. A good first playbook is often just a Heading, a Hockey Drill or Live Diagram, and a Text block explaining each player's job. See Playbook Content Blocks Explained for every block type.

Step 3 — Edit and arrange

  • Click the pencil icon on any block to edit its content, then click Save.
  • Drag a block by the grip icon to move it. You can also drop new blocks between existing ones.
  • Click the trash icon to remove a block.

Step 4 — Save

Auto-Save is on by default and saves your changes every 30 seconds, and again when you leave the page. Click Save Changes any time to save right away. You can turn it off with the Auto-Save: On toggle at the bottom of the builder.

Step 5 — Review and share

Click View Playbook to see it the way your team will. From there you can Present it, Download PDF, or click Share to copy the link.

Playbook Settings

Click Playbook Settings at the top of the builder to change the title and description, add Tags, set Playbook Visibility, add the playbook to folders, attach teams and invite collaborators.

Tips

  • Build one playbook per system (breakouts, forecheck, power play) rather than one giant playbook. They are easier to share and reuse.
  • Add a Callout with the one thing you want players to remember from each system.
  • A playbook belongs to you, not a team. Attach it to next season's team and it comes with you.
  • Deleted a playbook by mistake? It goes to the Trash for 30 days. Open My Playbooks → Trash to restore it.
