D Quick Up Breakout

Diagrams

Description

D looks over shoulder as they are approaching puck and sees opponents are late on the forecheck or changing. They quickly pivot and grab the puck and start skating up to gain ice and buy them some time to get to red line. The other players (wingers, center) need to react accordingly. Wingers post up along boards, center does tight little button hook staying in Center lane. D with the puck moves fast and makes decision to either pass or continue to carry. This will depend on where attackers are by then. The D partner will pivot and follow up play but make sure they are behind the puck carry D in case of a turnover or overskate.

This breaksdown when Forwards aren't paying attention and don't see the opportunity the D see. They need to stop up and don't feel they have to always get to hash marks for a standard breakout. Sometimes this isn't called for and they can simply post up and take off in the neutral zone. If they don't then what happens is the D is ahead of all of them has no one to pass to so then the pucks either gets turned over or dumped in and then our forecheck is too late and its like a turn over anyway although deeper in our opponents end which is better. This can also turn into a long stretch play by D to F pass and quick entry into offensive zone.
