PP Overload

Diagrams

Description

Overload starts once puck is retrieved or carried to a corner and the C is in the corner quarterbacking the PP. The LW or RW (whichever side its on) will be positioned on the hash marks and the other winger will be in front causing trouble for the other team's box. On the overload the puck starts from the C and goes to the winger who returns the pass quickly back to the center until the box or lane opens. The winger then cuts to the middle and looks for pass back from the C in the corner. The winger takes a quick shot and the winger in front crashes the net as does the C and the winger who shot the puck. The D creep in and jump on any rebounds or loose pucks that come out of the scrum. Possession after shots is crucial for successful PP. Likely not going to score on the first few shots.

Notes: On the right side of the above diagram is the other PP play which is C to W W to D back to W back to D. D slides across and other D slides in the same direction but down and off the blue closer to the net. The pass is made D to D for a quick shot. The C pops out of the corner for a rebound and the winger on hash marks drives the net as does the winger in front. Even the D that shoots the puck can cheat and get low for another high rebound. The D left on the blue make sure she is in the middle of the ice and can go both directions to keep puck in.

Category: Powerplay
Tags: Overload and D to D; PP is about possession and the same applies on a pulled goalie; always out man the opponent in every battle and get the puck to an open man which usually is the point. Be patient and make good quick passes
